3rd Philippine Capital Markets Investment Conference in CDO

Last June 25, 2015, the Philippine Stock Exchange organized the 3rd Philippine Capital Markets Investment Conference held at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. The event was participated by several working professionals and students from XU-School of Business and Management. The conference forms part of the Philippine Stock Exchange’s local roadshow project which enables the organization to promote financial literacy and stock market awareness in the country. The investment conference featured plenary sessions in the morning and simultaneous breakout sessions in the afternoon.

Morning Plenary Session
The morning plenary session started through an inspiring welcome remark from Mr. Jose Antonio S. Vilar, The Department Head of Marketing Services and Market Education of The Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. Then, a keynote address was delivered by the Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Hon. Ephyro Luis B. Amatong. Commissioner Amatong specifically tackled the importance of financial inclusion, investing in the capital market, and publicly-listing one’s business. He emphasized the importance of investing in the capital markets since an investor knows where his or her money goes as it is used for a company’s growth. Likewise, Mr. Augusto M. Cosio, Jr., President of First Metro Asset Management Inc., talked about the Philippine Economic Update and Capital Markets Outlook. His talk was very significant in the conference as he stressed the improvement of the Philippine’s risk profile. He spoke about the country’s annual progress in external debt and international reserves as it affect’s inflation. Together with the country’s political stability through the governance of the Aquino administration, the Philippines has been considered as a sweet spot where economic data, such as interest rates or employment data, are expected to lead to the best overall economic situation. In effect, economic growth can be seen at present resulting to mounting business opportunities, increasing foreign direct investments, and rising employment in the labor sector. Similarly, the Chief Operating Officer of the Philippine Stock Exchange Inc., Atty. Roel A. Refran, CPA, discussed the Philippine Capital Market Development through the empowerment of Small and Medium Enterprises or SMEs and Retail Investors. Atty. Refran gave importance on the SMEs in our country as it composed 99% of the Philippine’s business landscape. Hence, SMEs are considered economic drivers as they contribute to the generation of jobs. Also, he compared the capital market to ecosystem as it mirrors the economy. Through investments in the capital markets, everyone is benefitted from it, starting from the supplier until to the consumer. As such, he encouraged growing businesses to publicly-list their companies in order to increase its value which contribute to the country’s growth. Additionally, the Investor Bill of Rights from a Regulatory Perspective was discussed by Mr. Graciano Felizmenio, Jr., the Director of the Markets and Securities Regulation Division of the Securities and Exchange Commission. He tackled on the various investment or pyramiding schemes and scams that are emergent at present and how the investors could properly channel their money through investing in the capital markets. Lastly, the President of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc., Engr. Cerael C. Donggay highlighted the several investment opportunities in Cagayan de Oro City and in Mindanao, as well. Moreover, the morning plenary session was ended by a networking lunch.

The Investment Conference was an opportunity for the participants to meet and engage with the reputable speakers and other participants of the event. Indeed, it was a worthwhile experience for the participants especially for the XU – School of Business Management students as they have gained knowledge, information, and awareness on the ways to properly invest their money based on their financial goals and the importance of investing in the capital markets to achieve economic growth in our country.
